Handbags and Suitcases: Furniture Design Inspiration

Low Chest of Suitcases by Maarten De Ceulaer

I often dream of packing my vintage navy blue suitcase that I picked up one year in a Williamsburg thrift store and quitting the 9 – 5 daily grind to live the life of an international traveller.  While some believe that living out of a suitcase everyday is no way to live your life I cant think of anything better!  Waking up each day in a new city, exploring new cultures, meeting new friends and all the while sharing every moment with that one constant – the suitcase.

I may not have the luxury of waking up in those new cities with an adventure waiting for me but I can live my life out of a suitcase thanks to furniture designer Maarten De Ceulaer and his beautiful ‘wardrobe’ A Pile of Suitcases.  Much like his newer offering A Low Chest of Suitcases Maarten has taken an every day classic and made it into a very stylish and functional piece of furniture.

Home Traveller

Home Traveller by Anne Lorenz

At the recent [D3] Design Talents area of the Imm Cologne furniture fair Anne Lorenz unveiled her exciting new product the Home Traveller, a fun piece of portable furniture that every handbag fanatic would love to own.  Home Traveller is a beautiful piece, its playful character makes my mind relive the images of that iconic Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 08 advertising campaign photographed by Juergen Teller and featuring Victoria Beckham.

Anne describes Home Traveller as “a combination of a handbag and furniture – a play with those archetypes. Home Traveller can easily be carried from one place to another and be arranged in the living space like an accessory. Instead of normal furniture it has no fixed place in the room – it’s travelling through the home. It is as spacious like a chest but more flexible in the use.”
