Textiles Inspiration: Josef Frank 1885 – 1967

Gröna Fåglar by Josef Frank

Josef Frank was born in Austria in 1885 but later (1933) adopted Sweden as his permanent home. Originally an architect (this is emerging as a bit of a male textiles designer commonality) Josef Frank also designed furniture, glassware, lighting, wallpaper, carpets and most famously textiles. You may have seen his prints in Liberty of London?

Josef produced over 200 designs in 40 years, they were whimsical, fresh and colourful in a time full of stiff linear and conformist patterns. Josef Frank was recognised as being the father of modern Scandinavian design and you can still see his influence on design today. Lots of his designs are still in production today with the company Svenskt Tenn that he worked with continually from 1933 up until his death in 1967.
