Handmade and Hot: hand Woven Throw by Maxemilia

We recently spotted this amazing hand woven throw on Etsy and then found that Emily is a talented embroiderer too. See her website for her other skills or follow her on Facebook.

Who are you?

I am Emily Mackey – an artisan (skilled craftsperson).

Where are you?

I am based in London near the Regents canal. I studied Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University and specialised in weaving. I use embroidery/print/photography/weave/paint in my work.

Why do you hand make your products?

I hand make my products because I can, I thoroughly enjoy it, and I can also ensure that they are made to the quality that I am happy with. I source materials and suppliers locally where possible – including UK bred Alpaca. Some materials are best when sourced abroad though, like silk.

Where would you like to see them?

I’ve recently completed my first order for Heal’s. I made up a large batch of hand woven cushions (made on my dobby loom) using British wools, UK Alpaca, Mohair and Silk. It was extremely satisfying to pack up a mountain of cushions all made by myself. I am excited to see where this goes…

What hopes and dreams do you have for your products?

I would like to be able to look back at my creative life, when I am old, and know that the lions share of the work that I have sold has had my fair hand in it (quite literally!)

Thanks Emily!

Tamra and Gwyn
