Inspiration: Iris Apfel born August 29, 1921

Iris Apfel by Bruce Webber

Ye, lets all put loads of colour on and mix and match all our different styles of clothes and jewellery today, wear two ties if that’s the best you can do… Let’s brighten up this Monday and feel all fun and frivolous. No? Boring!

And that is exactly how Iris Apfel makes me feel, wired and inspired to be bright and bold.

Iris Apfel is a 90 year old Style Icon
. She was born and raised in Queens, New York. Apfel studied Art History at New York University and went to Wisconsin University to study art. Apfel worked for Womens Wear Daily and was successfully mixing Haute Couture and vintage LONG before anyone else. After two years of being married to Carl Apfel, they started the textile firm Old World Weavers until their retirement in 1992. Iris Apfel was a part of many design restoration projects at The White House for 9 presidents from Truman to Clinton!

Iris Apfel still enjoys working, she consults and lectures about style and fashion, she designs jewellery collections for companies like Yoox and is currently the muse for a MAC makeup campaign. In 2005 The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York did a retrospective about Apfel called Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel. It was so popular that it became a travelling show of Apfels wonderful collection of clothes, accessories and home furnishings. Apparently The Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History in Boynton Beach, Florida is designing a permanent home for her pieces. I would love to see this exhibition…

Check out this great video (and others on the website). These ladies are having way more fun than I am! I am so used to wearing black and grey with small pops of colour. I am boring, it’s official… This Spring and Summer is going to be different. Good on you Iris! Thanks for the glorious kick in my monochrome butt.
