Chair of the month: PP19 The Teddy Bear Chair by Hans Wegner

I have recently been dreaming of living in Denmark, to my mind the best design, especially mid-century design originated there. When wondering about which chair could be chair of the month, Hans Wegner raced to the front of my mind. Well, he did design over 500 chairs in his lifetime.

Re-released in 2003, The Papa Bear Chair or Teddy Bear Chair was originally designed by Hans Wegner in 1951 for AP Stolen. It was the first Wegner chair produced by the fabulous Danish craftsmen and joiners at PP Møbler (who are still producing beautiful work today) and was the start of a great relationship and respect between designer and makers. Often PP Møbler would make Wegner perfect prototypes which were then copied by another manufacturer, in this case AP Stolen.

The very popular chair received it’s name from a critic who exclaimed that the chair had ‘great bear paws embracing you from behind’.

The PP19 The Teddy Bear Chair with it’s matching PP120 foot-rest – is still so desirable to me because I want to curl up/stretch out in it with a great book. A chair that gets you excited to relax in is one of it’s most beautiful features. Unfortunately it’s $22,000+ price tag is slightly less desirable… But when you find out it takes 2 whole weeks to hand make out of all natural fibres and you know that it will be with you for your whole life, then your children’s lives (and so on) maybe it is worth the cost of a medium priced car??

Watch this great video to see how it is made.
