Handmade and Hot: Ohhh Lulu

We recently came across Ohhh Lulu on Etsy and just had to share their super cute handmade underwear with you. Read about how the business started below…

Who are you and where is your workshop?

Hello! My name is Sarah, I am the one-woman show behind Ohhh Lulu.  I live in Orillia, Ontario Canada, a beautiful little town surrounded by lakes and forests.  My shop is run out of my home studio.  I live here with my husband Daniel, my pug Oliver, and we are expecting our first baby this October!

When did you start Ohhh Lulu Lingerie? Love the name! How did you come up with it?

I started Ohhh Lulu “officially” in October 2010, though the idea had been floating around in my head for a long time! I am a graduate of George Brown College’s Fashion Design Program, and have always wanted to run my own creative business.  The name, I have to give my husband credit for.  I wanted something sweet and airy, and that incorporated my nick name “Lulu.” The minute I heard it, it just felt right!

What originally inspired you to start sewing?

I can’t remember a time in my life when I haven’t been sewing.  When I was a child, I would sew doll clothes with my grandmother and Halloween costumes with my mom.  As a teenager, growing up in a small town and wanting to express myself through fashion, I became more and more obsessed with sewing and designing my own clothes.  I really love sewing, it remains my favourite hobby.  Because of this, I decided to release a collection of sewing patterns in conjunction with my made-to-order lingerie to share my love of lingerie-making with other sewists!

What is the best thing about hand making your products?

For me, there is nothing more fulfilling than taking a yard of fabric and turning it into a beautiful, functional piece of clothing.  It feels so good to be able to create things with your own hands.  I love being able to experiment with techniques and colour combinations.

Where can we buy your lingerie and what new things are you working on?

My lingerie is currently available through Etsy, www.ohhhlulu.etsy.com, as are my sewing patterns, www.ohhhlulusews.etsy.com.  I am working on many new things right now, including a small collection of swimsuits that I hope to have released in May, as well as a mini-summer collection that will feature saturated florals, gingham, strawberry prints, and lots of lace.

How would you like your collection to grow? And where else would you like to see it sold?

Keeping Ohhh Lulu locally made and handmade is something that is very important to me.  I think it is part of the appeal of my products – everything can be customized just for you! I have had the opportunity in the past to expand into a larger retail market, but I have decided that is not the way I want to take Ohhh Lulu.  I do hope to expand into smaller boutiques, especially here in Canada, and would love to hire a seamstress or two locally to help me increase production, but I do not plan on outsourcing to factory labour or expanding into major retailers.  Small businesses are what help to make our communities unique and vibrant, and I hope to be able to collaborate with other small business owners in the near future!

What do you love most about what you do?

I love designing the first sample of a new garment.  It is so fulfilling to see a new piece of clothing come to life.  Every day I feel so fortunate that I am able to share what I love with the world!

Thanks Sarah. Great story and good luck with your lovely products and Ohhh Lulu!
