At the Farmers Market this April
April is (almost) here – and thank goodness for that. With it comes warmer weather, a feeling of survival after enduring winter, and new produce items at your farmer’s market! Here’s what to look for when picking up produce through the next glorious, glorious month.
Don’t be scared. This fruit is not only packed with fibre, potassium, magnesium and more nutrients, but it’s also much easier to incorporate into your meals than you may think. We recommend whipping up this papaya pancake recipe for a lovely weekend brunch.
Get in the seasonal citrus while you still can at the Farmers Market this April. Oranges are sticking around through April, and while the vitamin C powerhouse is in season, we suggest eating them for breakfast, lunch (like the Roasted Fennel, Red Onion, and Orange Salad above), dinner and dessert with this orange cake.
What? Turnips aren’t apart of your weekly grocery list? Well take the month of April to experiment with the root vegetable, which has calcium, fibre and more. One non-terrifying way to do so is with this glazed turnips dish.
Another oddball for many kitchens, chicory is an herbaceous plant that typically appears with bright blue flowers. You could stick it in a vase, use the herbaceous leaves in salads or you can be daring and use the roots to whip up this sautéed chicory recipe. We also liked the look of this Caramelized Red Chicory (pic above). If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, we recommend this pasta with sausage and chicory.
Will you get to your local Farmers Market this April?
