Sally Campbell is a wonderful Textile Designer from Australia. She inspires me because she lives and breaths the art and is always inspiring me with her Instagram shots of travels in India and the talented artisans she meets and the lovely fabrics she finds.
Sally Campbell Textiles
This kind of inspiration reminds me of my student days and of being happily immersed in Textile Design and the joys of printing. I see in her work a lot of patterns I have seen before but done so sensitively with great regard to tradition and joyful use of colour, just perfect for todays market.
Sally had always loved textiles but spent her formative career working in a demanding film industry as a costume and set designer. After becoming unwell Sally decided to move on “to create beautiful handcrafted textiles and give them a contemporary edge to suit modern environments,”. A great idea as I’m sure being surrounded by all these fabulous and creative people and working with them to create new textiles is nourishing to both her body and her soul.
Sally Campbell is special because she works with talented small communities in India, each piece she creates with them is carbon neutral and eco-friendly. Each has been ‘hand-dyed’, ‘hand-stiched’, ‘hand-woven’ or ‘hand block-printed’.
I think that most of these patterns have been around for centuries and are from age old wooden blocks but the manipulation is modern, the use of colour is fabulous and the fact that every time Sally makes a sale and a customer falls in love with one of her quilts (for e.g.) it says a little prayer for artisanal textiles.
